Lets count the money away shall we?

80's are an expensive hobby.

I count about $7400 in add ons, or about a grand more than I spent on the vehicle.

I really like those. In fact, I was looking in the window of a '97 anniversary edition as it cruised alongside the bus on the way to work this morning. Same color. They remain on my "will buy someday" list. I just wish the guy driving wouldn't have been fiddling with the phone in his hand.

cool rig. Upgrades to LC's are a lot cheaper if you make them yourself. The only piece I bought was my front bumper, which I bought before I got seriously into welding. Seen here are my aluminum roof and custom rear bumper.

Is that ladder swing away?

the ladder and tire are all on the same swing arm. I also connected the ladder into the roof rack for added strength. It attaches to the roof rack via a drop pin (otherwise known as a re-purposed bolt).

interesting, and you weld aluminum? I've got a 110 wire welder I don't know how to use (inherited) and I want to learn but obviously aluminum is out of my reach.

I do indeed weld aluminum. I very much consider myself a hobbyist welder, however, aluminum is not that hard. Its all about prep- clean surfaces, compatible alloys, and a decent welder. Quite honestly 110s aren't good for much that goes on an FJ80 with the exception of maybe the roof rack. Welding is a great hobby that is easy enough to learn. Youtube helps a lot and classes are affordable. The 110 would be prefect for learning and getting your feet wet though. You should get it out!

I was told steel up to 3/16 is okay with 110, no?

I wouldn't weld anything thicker than 1/4" and even with that you need more prep such as beveling the edges to make a nice channel for the weld. Sure you could probably weld some small pieces of 3/16 but the heat soak on big pieces of metal (like a bumper) would make it difficult. Moral of the story is welding on the limits of a welder is much more difficult than welding in the happy zone of a welder.
